Credenza in the style of Paolo Buffa

Italian 1940’s Credenza
Italy c. 1945

Rich brown stained oak credenza with six drawers, metal pulls and sabots.
The distinctive leg design of this cabinet appears on cabinets and desks by both Paolo Buffa and Tomaso Buzzi. As we have found no documentation showing this particular cabinet, we are stating it is in the style of Buffa rather than by him.

Pair of Armchairs by George Ray for John Vesey

Published on: By James White

Pair of V-54 Lounge Chairs designed by George Ray for John Vesey Polished stainless steel construction. 27”W, 29”D, 31”H

USA c. 1955

The above description from an original John Vesey Inc.catalogue, credits the design of these chairs to George Ray. These rarely seen chairs were exclusive to John Vesey. My research shows a George N. Ray 1887-1959; a prominent Washington DC Architect. Ray’s commissions of embassies and important private residences indicate that he was well placed in Washington DC society. Vesey’s well documented connections to high society, make the possibility of the two knowing each other extremely likely. Ray’s late work is described as having turned more spare, massed and modern. It seems a good bet that he is the George Ray who is credited with the design of these chairs. Vesey launched his showroom in 1958. Ray’s date of death was 1959. If in fact, George N. Ray the architect is the same George Ray in the catalogue description, these chairs would have been part of Vesey’s initial 15 designs. Heavy and substantially built, they are beautifully rendered, Particularly pleasing is how the arm pads continue the entire length of the arm, inset into the steel frame, creating a single unbroken plane. The chairs, in need of re-upholstery are priced accordingly.
